Keep your newly straight teeth in line
Retainers are a vital part of all orthodontic treatment, used to maintain your new smile and keep your teeth beautifully straight for the long term. We offer two types of retainers – fixed and removable.
Fixed retainers
A fixed retainer is a thin metal wire bonded directly to the back surface of your teeth. It cannot be removed and is designed to remain in place for the long term, maintaining your straight smile. Fixed retainers are discreet and unobtrusive, with other people unable to see they are there.
The fixed option offers a reliable way to retain your teeth following orthodontic treatment, as there is no risk of them becoming accidentally left out of your mouth. If you have a fixed retainer, you need to pay close attention to brushing and flossing, to prevent plaque building up in the area and forming decay.
Removable retainers
Removable retainers are very similar to clear aligners or a thin mouthguard, and are custom made to accurately fit your teeth. They are a popular option, as they are able to be taken out for eating and brushing, and are virtually invisible when worn. Most patients will be advised to wear their removable retainer full time for the first few weeks or months after completing orthodontic treatment, but this can usually be reduced to overnight only before long.
Removable retainers are very comfortable to wear, even while you sleep, and are convenient and effective. Your retainer needs to be kept in a hard storage box when out of your mouth, to ensure it does not get lost or broken.
Which type of retainer do I need?
Unless there is a clinical need for you to have a certain type of retainer, you will be able to choose between a fixed or removable retainer. We are happy to advise you which would be best for your individual case, your lifestyle and your preferences, and discuss the pros and cons with you.
The most important thing is that you wear your retainer for as long as you want to keep your stunning straight smile. We recommend a removable retainer is worn overnight for the long term, and a fixed retainer is kept in place indefinitely. Without retention, you risk undoing all your hard work during orthodontic treatment.
